This is one of the brands that have bounced around over the decades since the “quartz crisis” despite its important heritage. The Super Sea Wolf was among the first modern dive watches defining the category in 1953. However since its inception, and most definitely through the 70s and the Vietnam War, this watch was made to be worn as useful, every day tool. Thankfully Zodiac has been brought to life and has even revisited their penchant for having fun with color. However the steel skin diver is the unsung hero for me! The black markings on the bezel remind me of my vintage Nikons. The modern take of the Sea Wolf has been slightly updated in size but the skin diver is a pretty faithful recreation otherwise. There’s some unique and quirky design elements that really stand out in the “deep sea” of Sub homages... the triangle dial markers, that “upside down” 30, dauphin hands and the little triangles every three minutes on the bezel... what do they mean? No matter... this watch oozes cool and that’s why it’s a favorite.
